The Western world has never seen a cost of living crisis like this in living memory. In times like these, you will be looking to save money and cut back on unnecessary expenses wherever possible. One of the easiest and fastest ways to save money, is to change the way you shave – and here, I will show you exactly how to beat inflation with wet-shaving.

The official inflation rate in the United States for the month of June was 9.1% year-on-year, but those statistics are very much cooked up to make the inflation numbers look better than they really are. If you go by the old methodology, back before the mid-90s revision of the approach that the Bureau of Labour Statistics uses to compute these numbers, the true inflation rate is running in excess of 15% per year, and may well be as high as 20% by now.

This is nothing short of a disaster for men of all ages, especially those nearing retirement age. Inflation destroys savings, wipes out retirement plans, and puts a severe squeeze on household budgets, because wages rise (and fall) much more slowly than prices do, as a general rule.

In such an environment, you need advice that helps you save money and cut spending wherever possible. If you can get advice that also hits woke corporations that hate you, right where it hurts, then so much the better.

The Cost of Being a Normie

I created that graph more than 2 years ago to demonstrate the difference in prices between different components of a man’s shave. Even these numbers, though, do not provide a sufficiently detailed breakdown. It is worth seeing the actual numbers up close, so that you can understand just how big the cost differential is.

If you want to know how to beat inflation with wet-shaving, then you need to consider these differences very carefully.

Fixed Costs

The only area where cartridge shaving wins out, against wet-shaving, is in what economists call “sunk costs”. These are the one-time costs that you have to pay in order to engage in a specific activity. In the case of a cartridge razor, you simply need to buy a handle for the cartridges, which is actually quite cheap.

As I have pointed out before, for wet-shaving, you need to buy at minimum all of the following items:

A safety razor, like the Muhle R89 closed-comb model;

A razor and brush stand, such as the Bevel model;

A badger- or boar-bristle shaving brush – there are many possible options, the Parker model is a good starting choice;

A blade bank,

The total one-time cost of all of these items is about US$115, roughly speaking.

By comparison, a single Gillette Fusion ProGlide razor handle, with two refills, is only US$14.97.

Initially, then, you are paying 5-8 times more to begin your wet-shaving journey. But it is a grave error to believe that this is the end of the story.

When you buy a safety razor and a stand, provided you stick to sensible and well-trusted brands like Muhle or Merkur, these items will last you for YEARS – possibly even decades, if you take good care of your equipment. A plastic cartridge razor handle, on the other hand, is merely a disposable item – subject to wear and tear and breakage, liable to be easily lost.

Likewise, a badger brush from a good brand will last for many years – these are quality products designed for discerning customers.

So the costs will amortise over a very long time horizon, meaning that your daily average cost is extremely low.

Variable Costs

What about the annual costs of wet-shaving? How much do these work out to when you include the cost of razor blades, shaving soap, pre-shave and post-shave products? It is worth taking a look in more detail at these items. It is here that you will really see the difference in cost, and this will help you see how to beat inflation with wet-shaving.

Pre-Shave Cream

A single tub of Proraso Pre Shave Cream, like the one you see above, will cost you about US$13 per unit. Using this is optional, but I highly recommend it, as a pre-shave cream will make your overall shave much more smooth and pleasant. In my experience, one such tub of cream will last roughly 40 days. Assuming that you shave every single day, then you will buy about 9 of these every year, give or take.

Shaving Soap

Each tub of Proraso Shaving Soap lasts an amazingly long time – 6 months, in my own personal experience. You will only need to buy at most TWO of these, every year. Each one costs, at present, about US$9.50.

After-Shave Balm

The Proraso After Shave Balm product provides a relaxing and pleasant finish to your daily shave. It is a must-have product. In my experience, every unit lasts about 80 days, and presently costs US$16.00.

Safety Razor Blades

These are by far the cheapest and easiest items to acquire, but even here, there are huge price differentials between various products. The most expensive in the market, by a substantial margin, are the Merkur razor blades, which are quite pricey – but you can pick up a set of 3 packs of 10 blades each for US$20. Each blade will last you one week per side, for a total of 60 weeks’ worth of shaving. So you only need to buy one set.

If this is too expensive, and you don’t mind paying money to Gillette – even though they hate you – then a set of 40 Astra blades will set you back just US$6.03. Each Astra blade side lasts a week, from my own experience.

The good news with blades is that you can pick and choose whatever suits you best. You can try lots of different brands and stick to the one that you like the best. Razor blades are truly recyclable and easy to acquire.

My advice is not to go for the cheapest option, because that will inevitably be some cut-price Chinese brand that will result in a cut-price shave – which is to say, literal cuts and nicks on your neck. Stick instead to Swedish, German, or Japanese products wherever you can.

Adding It All Up

It is not difficult to calculate how much all of this comes to in one year. Here is a table that lays it all out for you:

Product

Cost Per Unit

Purchases Per Year

Total Cost

Proraso Pre Shave Cream

13.00

9.13

118.71

Proraso Shaving Soap

9.50

2.00

19.00

Proraso After Shave Balm

16.00

4.57

73.05

Merkur Pack of 3 x 10 Blades

20.00

1.00

20.00

The total cost for one year of all of that: US$231. That comes to just 63 cents per day in variable shaving costs, if you shave every single day.

Now let us compare this with the total cost of shaving with cartridge razor products. Let’s say that you buy Gillette’s Fusion ProGlide product line. This means that you will need to fork out for cartridges, shaving gel, and after-shave balm.

The problem here is that cartridge razors have very variable life spans. Some men find that they become dull after just a couple of shaves. Others claim that they can get a full month of shaving from them. My own experience is that each Fusion ProGlide cartridge is good for one week of shaving, on average. So I’ll stick with that.

Furthermore, Gillette’s shave gel is horrible stuff – it is a chemical paste that makes your skin all soft and lumpy, like bad pudding. And it runs out fast – one can lasts about a month, if that. So you will need to buy these frequently. And that is where the costs really add up.

The Gillette After Shave Gel is the cheapest, and lowest quality, out of all of these products. Each one lasts about 2 months, in my experience.

Using the latest prices from Walmart, we can put together a similar table showing the costs of a single year’s shaving:

Product

Cost Per Unit

Purchases Per Year

Total Cost

Gillette Fusion ProGlide Shield Pack of 4 Cartridges

19.97

13.00

259.61

Gillette Fusion ProGlide Sensitive 2 in 1 Shave Gel

12.99

12.00

155.88

Gillette Sensitive Skin After Shave Gel

7.46

6.00

44.76

That total comes to US$460, or US$1.26 per day, assuming daily shaving

Conclusion – The Numbers Don’t Lie

The difference is stark: traditional wet-shaving is HALF the annual cost of mass-market cartridge-razor shaving, once you amortise away the initial sunk costs. Switching your shaving method will save you money, give you better grooming results, and keep your product line very consistent. You will not have to constantly upgrade to more expensive products that are subject to the infamous “shrinkflation” that is so common today, where you pay the same price for less stuff.

If you want to save even more money, try using olive oil as your pre-shave lotion. It isn’t for everyone – doing so will cut down on the life of your razor blades significantly. But you will drop your daily cost of shaving down to pennies on average.

These hundreds of dollars are a small saving relative to the overall cost of living. But, in these hard times when inflation is destroying so much value on a daily basis, my guides, product reviews, and other information will show you exactly how to beat inflation with wet-shaving.

The post
Sooner or later most wet-shaving enthusiasts inevitably come across the idea of using olive oil as part of their daily shave. There are good reasons for this. Olive oil has a number of extraordinary beneficial health properties. In fact, we know that the ancient Romans used olive oil for beauty and cleaning. Olive oil is an excellent moisturiser when applied to skin. But can you actually shave using olive oil? Opinion among shaving enthusiasts on this topic is certainly fairly divided. In this article we will unpack the truth about shaving with olive oil.

Advocates of shaving with olive oil argue that it is much healthier for facial skin than standard shaving gels and foams. Certainly, most mass-produced shaving gels and creams contain some very nasty chemicals. On top of this, olive oil is very cheap, per litre, compared to shaving foams and gels. So it seems like a no-brainer to ditch shaving gels and foams and use olive oil instead.

However, there is more to the story. These important benefits must be weighed against the costs. You should not switch to shaving with olive oil without considering a couple of important points first.

A Rough Tough Shave

Good-quality olive oil is relatively thick and viscous. When you shave with it, the oil will catch the hairs and they will then stick to your blade. If you use a “housed” blade, this will inevitably cause blockages and reduce overall shaving effectiveness. This will be true regardless of whether you use a cartridge or safety razor.

Furthermore, because oil and water do not mix by definition, you will find that your blade will be more difficult to clean. You cannot easily wash the hairs off your blade.

The moisturising qualities of olive oil also come at the cost of decreased lubrication. Your shave will definitely be more rough and less pleasant as a result. You will most likely experience considerably more irritation after shaving. If you have sensitive skin, this fact alone rules out using olive oil by itself.

For these reasons, the truth is that I cannot recommend shaving with olive oil ALONE, while using a traditional safety razor. I speak from experience here. I shaved with olive oil alone for several months using a cartridge razor. The roughness and irritation stopped me from using olive oil alone when I switched to traditional safety razors back in 2015.

A Sensible Alternative

That is not to say that you cannot incorporate olive oil into your daily shave – quite the contrary, in fact. There are several different ways to shave with olive oil.

Here I will lay out for you a useful, tried-and-tested method:

Soak a small towel in water and put it in a microwave-safe bowl.

Microwave the towel for one minute on high power. LET THE TOWEL SIT FOR 20 SECONDS – it will be extremely hot.

Put your face over the bowl and let the steam from the towel soften your beard.

Once the towel has cooled a little, apply it to your face and let it sit there for a few seconds. This will further moisten and soften your stubble.

With both hands, generously apply olive oil across your face and massage it into your stubble. Push against the grain of the hair.

Shave as you usually would, taking extra care to shave slowly with short strokes.

Apply an alcohol-free after-shave balm when finished.

The Best Way to Use Olive Oil for Shaving

The method outlined above does work. However, if you do this using a safety razor, rather than a straight or “cutthroat” razor, your blade life will be much shorter. This isn’t really a big problem for you, given the cheapness of razor blades these days. If you don’t want to keep changing blades frequently, though, you need a better way.

Fortunately, that “better way” combines the moisturising and toning qualities of olive oil, with the art and tradition and excellence of traditional wet-shaving.

The key here is to use olive oil like a pre-shave lotion. You simply apply it to your face and massage it in, as outlined in step 5 of the process above. And this approach absolutely works.

My Daily Shaving Method

Here is how you can incorporate olive oil effortlessly into your daily shave. I have used this precise approach five to six days a week for five years. This method will give you a great shave every single day:

Wash your face with warm water to soften your stubble and beard.

Take about a tablespoon of extra-virgin olive oil and massage it all over your face. (You may want to warm it up in a microwave for 10-15 seconds first, though I don’t recommend this.)

Add more oil to cover your face as necessary.

Get your high-quality badger-hair shaving brush and your favourite type of Proraso shaving soap ready. Wet your shaving brush and shake off the excess water.

Create a thick creamy lather with your brush and soap. Apply the soap using clockwise circular strokes of the brush on your face. Add a second pass of lather using counter-clockwise circles to your face. This method ensures that the brush lifts up each hair to moisturise it.

After you have fully lathered your face, get your safety razor with its high-quality blade and shave with short, careful strokes.

Wash up, apply some after-shave balm, and carry on with your day.

Tips for Getting the Best Shave with Olive Oil

The truth about shaving with olive oil is that you can experience significant benefits from using it in your daily routine. You can maximise those benefits by following these simple tips:

Get EXTRA-VIRGIN OLIVE OIL. This is a bit more expensive but worth the cost. EVOO has a much higher percentage of healthy saturated fats and therefore is better as a moisturiser.

Get oil from people who care about their product. This applies to oil that you buy for cooking and salad dressings too, by the way. Olive oil breaks down from sunlight and heat. Mass manufacturers of the stuff sell poor-quality oil in transparent bottles. That is because those bottles are cheap, and they do not block sunlight from breaking down the oil itself. Always buy olive oil sold in heavy, dark bottles. I personally love California Olive Ranch’s oil and highly recommend them.

Store your oil carefully. As always, if you take good care of your tools, they will take good care of you. Olive oil is another tool that you can use for shaving. Buy good quality oil, keep it away from light and heat, and you will experience a better shave every time.

Conclusions

The truth is that you can start shaving with olive oil easily and quickly. You can experience the benefits from doing so simply by using it as a pre-shave lotion. You can get enough olive oil to last you for six months’ worth of shaving for less than $25. And you can enjoy your shave with confidence and comfort, knowing that your skin will benefit every day from using olive oil.

Most men have no problems with itching, irritation, or inflammation of any kind after shaving. However, there is a substantial minority of men – the proportion could be as high as 30% – who have sensitive skin. That sensitivity causes no shortage of problems for them during their daily shave. Fortunately, if you are in this category, there is no reason for your daily shave to be unpleasant or irritating. For such men, here are some wet shaving tips for sensitive skin that will have you well on your way to a great daily shave.

Defining “Sensitive Skin”

The problem here is that there is no universally accepted definition of “sensitive skin”. Basically, if you have it, then you know about it. However, in order to optimise your daily shave, you need to be sure that your skin actually is a bit sensitive. Perhaps you’ve simply been using cartridge razors for a long time – this is not good for your skin no matter what kind you have. To be sure whether you actually have sensitivity, see if you answer “yes” to any of the following questions:

Do you have dry skin? You can check this using a simple and cheap skin hydration monitor;

Are you prone to eczema or contact dermatitis around your face?

Is your face often dry or itchy even on a humid summer’s day?

Do you often get acne breakouts?

Does your skin flake and peel easily?

Are you prone to sunburn?

Do you easily develop rashes?

Do you get a lot of irritation and razor burn from cartridge razors and shaving foams/gels?

If you are still unsure, make an appointment with a dermatologist and get your skin checked out. Yes, it is perfectly fine for a man to do this, nobody will think any less of you. It’s your face, so take good care of it.

Change Your Razor Blades

Now that you are reasonably sure that you have sensitive skin, you need to equip yourself appropriately for your daily shave.

As always, get yourself a proper safety razor first. Once you have that, though, you need real razor blades that will provide a low-irritation shave. To accomplish this, you need to buy mild or neutrally aggressive razor blades. I went over this in my previous post about the best razor blades that you can buy. As far as wet shaving tips for sensitive skin go, the biggest and most important one has to do with your choice of razor blade.

For my money, Merkur makes the very best blades out there:

They are expensive, however, so if you want a cheaper alternative, get yourself the VIKINGS BLADE mild blades. Always make sure you get the green package, not the red one, from VIKINGS BLADE. Their green-pack blades are made especially for men who want a milder shave:

Do not buy Astra or Feather blades. These are extremely sharp and highly aggressive. They have their place in the world of wet shaving, but they are designed more for men with tough and coarse stubble. That isn’t you, by definition, so don’t worry about them, even if they are cheap.

The Proraso White Line

Now that you’ve switched to a milder razor blade, such as the Merkur or VIKINGS BLADE offering, you need to make sure that your other shaving products are designed to suit your skin as well. These are essential wet shaving tips for sensitive skin. A good pre-shave lotion will soften the beard and help your blade glide better over your skin. A good shaving soap or cream (never use foam if you can avoid it) will reduce any itching or redness that you get from shaving. An alcohol-free after-shave balm will soothe and smooth your skin.

The net effect of using such products will be a smooth, gentle, and enjoyable daily wet shave. As a result, your whole day will get started off the right way. You will literally present your best face to the world. And if you want to be the best, you need to get the best.

I recommend using Proraso’s White line of products for all things related to your wet shave if you have sensitive skin. Proraso is an Italian company that makes exceptionally fine quality shaving soaps, creams, oils, foams, and pre- and post-shave lotions and balms. In my personal opinion, they are quite simply the very best in the business. And I only recommend the best to my readers.

Always Apply a Pre-Shave Lotion or Oil

Proraso’s White pre-shave lotion is perfectly designed for men with sensitive skin. Like the rest of Proraso’s White line, this product combines oatmeal extract and green tea for the perfect balance of moisture and smoothness.

Here is how you go about using this lotion:

Pour some warm water into your hands. Massage this into your stubble. Don’t use a towel, as this may irritate your skin. Shake off or smooth away any excess water to leave your face damp and warm. Pour a small amount of Proraso pre-shave lotion into your palm and smooth this into your face using slow circular motions with your fingers. Don’t push against the grain of your stubble when you do this.

Use a Really Good Shaving Soap

Now that you have prepared your face, you will want to apply a specially designed shaving soap or cream. Again, Proraso’s White line provides the perfect shaving soap for you. Their White shaving soap (or cream, if you prefer that), has a superb mild formulation and scent. You know that you’re using a quality product when you apply this to your face. Proraso’s line of products simply feels better than anything else.

Grab your genuine silvertip badger brush and work up a good lather. Apply the lather to your face using a circular motion on your face. This will help improve the quality of the lather. The motion will also lift up the hairs on your face, so that your blade can shave it down properly. As a result, you will get rid of ingrown hairs and reduce irritation significantly.

Finish With an Alcohol-Free Shaving Balm

Once you are done shaving, make sure to soothe and moisturise your skin again with a proper after-shave lotion or balm. Once more, Proraso provides you with exactly the right product. Their White after-shave balm is completely free of alcohol, so it doesn’t dry out your skin and doesn’t sting when you apply it. This balm will soothe away any irritation that you might feel while refreshing and moisturising your face.

Shaving With Sensitive Skin is a Pleasure Again

Even if you have sensitive skin, you no longer need to dread shaving in the morning. Just follow the simple wet shaving tips for sensitive skin that I have outlined here. Your daily shaving experience should significantly improve. You should feel much less itchiness and irritation. Your skin should feel much more moist and soft. Best of all, by switching to traditional safety razors, you will get rid of perhaps the biggest causes of irritation – razor burn and ingrown hairs.

So what are you waiting for? Get yourself the necessary products, start with your daily wet shaves, and experience far more pleasure and joy in your daily shaving ritual as a result!

Given the high costs of modern cartridge-based shaving, increasing numbers of men around the world are looking for alternatives and are asking: what is wet shaving? Since you are here, you are no doubt asking the same question. Whether you are looking to save money, improve your shave, or just try something new, this article will tell you how to get started with wet-shaving.

What Exactly Is (Traditional) Wet Shaving?

The simplest definition of wet shaving is: any form of shaving that involves water applied directly to the face.

If you shave with a mechanical razor, like this one, that is dry-shaving.

If, on the other hand, you use water to wet your hair and perhaps then apply some sort of oil, gel, foam, or soap, then that is wet-shaving.

By this definition, if you use mass-market cartridge razors and gels and so on, you are performing a wet shave every morning.

Equipment and technique therefore separate “traditional” and “modern” wet shaving.

This post is about how traditional wet-shaving works. If you want to know why you should take up traditional wet-shaving, read this first. Once you have done so, let’s look at how to get the best shave of your life with a simple safety razor, a proper shaving brush, and some shaving soap.

Step 1: Acquire the Necessary Equipment

The quality of your results depends on how much effort and investment you put into your task. That is true in life, and it is true in shaving. Fortunately, traditional wet-shaving requires a relatively small initial investment. You can get everything that you need for an entire year of shaving for an initial outlay of about $150. If that sounds like a lot, divide it by 365 to get your daily cost of shaving. You will quickly see that the daily cost of shaving is very low.

To start with traditional wet-shaving, you need the following essential items:

Safety razor;

Pack of razor blades;

Shaving brush;

Tub of shaving soap;

You can also invest in the following optional items:

Some good pre-shave lotion or cream;

A high-quality after-shave balm or lotion;

Step 2: Preparation

Your daily shave is a ritual that celebrates tradition, precision, and style. It should be treated as such. Do not regard your shave as a boring necessity. Think of it instead as a way to present your best face to the world.

Start your first shave with a fresh blade. Unscrew the comb of the safety razor. The comb is the container for the blade and in most open-comb razors consists of two separate metal parts that are held together by the handle. With a closed-comb razor, all you have to do is twist the handle around to open the blade housing. Place a fresh razor blade into the comb, and screw it all back together.

Be very careful when handling double-edged blades. They are extremely thin and REALLY sharp.

Do not over-tighten the comb. If you do this, you can force the blade to crack and warp. This will worsen your shave. Tighten it just enough to ensure that the comb is securely closed.

Now, start by applying warm water to your face – not cold. Take some warm water in your hands and rub it on your face. This will lubricate and soften the hair on your face before you apply shaving soap.

Step 3: Lather Up

The following video explains exactly how to create a lather of the right consistency and richness for your morning shave:

This is by far the most time-consuming, and yet important, stage of the entire shaving process. Take your time with it. Enjoy the ritual. Savour the experience. You absolutely should use a high-quality shaving soap for this step. I recommend soaps that have high concentrations of coconut oil, which is packed full of healthy fats. As a result, the skin on your face will feel fresh and supple after your shave.

Step 4: Use the Safety Razor

There are three keys to getting a great shave with a double-edged safety razor.

First, use short strokes. The safety razor is a precision instrument designed to be wielded with care. Because the blade is EXTREMELY sharp, long strokes are absolutely not advised, as you will inevitably end up running over something and cutting it. Use short and careful strokes along the contours of your face.

Second, let the weight of the razor do the work. Do not apply ANY additional pressure when shaving with a double-edged safety razor. If you do, you WILL cut yourself and you WILL tear off parts of your face. A high-quality safety razor is heavy, as it is supposed to be. It will feel substantial in your hand, as any quality product should.

Third, shave WITH the grain, never against. Every man’s face is a little different. The contours of stubble will therefore be different. Find out what pattern of shaving is most comfortable for you. Shaving against the grain will lead to tremendous irritation, friction, and razor burn. I advise very strongly against it.

Now, I warn you that the first two weeks or so of shaving with a safety razor will be pretty uncomfortable. You will feel a lot of itchiness and irritation. This is normal. Your skin will take some time to adjust to the extreme sharpness of the blade and the fact that you are using nourishing shaving soap or cream, rather than mass-market gel or foam.

Do not be disheartened. Persevere. The shaves will get much easier. Your skin will get stronger. As a result, you will feel better.

Step 5: Rinse Off and Apply Aftershave

If you have performed all of the steps above correctly, you will have a smooth, stubble-free, refreshed face. Apply a proper aftershave lotion to sooth and nourish your skin. You are now ready to face the world as a well-groomed, confident, masculine man.

Conclusion

Once you start with traditional wet-shaving, you will never, ever go back to your old multi-blade mass-market cartridge razor. Quite aside from the expense involved, you will recoil at the insubstantial, cheap, plastic feeling of a cartridge against your skin. Because of the multiple blades, you will feel the unpleasant sensation of tugging at each hair as the cartridge rasps over your skin, leaving you with razor burn.

Don’t do it unless you have absolutely no other choice. Invest in yourself, your grooming, and your skin’s health. Switch to traditional wet-shaving. Shave like your grandfathers did, and reap the same benefits that they did back in the day. They were likely strong, confident, capable, well-groomed men – be like them, not the scraggy neckbearded dishevelled soyboys of today.

Most men usually treat shaving as a simple daily necessity. As a result, they always overlook the benefits of wet shaving, because they don’t know any better. They put no more thought or effort into it than they would into buying a cup of coffee. They buy whatever mass-market products they see on TV – cartridge razors, shaving foam or gel, aftershave, and so on – and put perhaps five minutes of effort into their daily grooming ritual. To them, shaving is just something that needs to be done.

This is a serious mistake. That attitude reduces shaving to a mere procedure and denies its true importance.

As men, we should take pride in our careful grooming and presentation. We should take care and with shaving. And we should always strive to get the best value for our money when it comes to shaving products.

If you have always used cartridge razors and mass-market gels and foams for your daily shaving routines, my message to you is: STOP.

There is a much better way to shave – the old way, the traditional way, the way that at one point seemed lost to the past.

That way is traditional wet-shaving.

No School Like the Old School

This is the kind of shave that you used to get from your local barber, back in your grandfather’s day. In those days, your barber would use an old-school brush to work up a lather out of a tin of soap or cream and apply it to your face. He would then use an extremely sharp straight razor to give you a very close shave. If he was good at his craft, he could do so without ever giving you a single cut or nick. He would finish the procedure by applying some refreshing balm or lotion to your face.

That was a great way to shave. It was traditional, manly, and pleasant. Most of all, it was special.

The good news is that get the benefits of wet shaving, in your own home, at a fraction of the cost of modern cartridge-based shaving, and in far less time than it would take for your barber.

In case you need more convincing, here are the top 5 benefits of wet-shaving:

1. You Will Save a TON of Money

Have you ever stopped to think about how much money you are spending on replacement razor cartridges? A pack of 8 Gillette Fusion Power cartridges will set you back about $30, depending on where you buy it. And each cartridge will last about 10 days, if you’re lucky.

And that’s before you get to adding up the costs of a can of pressurised shaving gel or foam, which lasts maybe 22 days, 30 if you are frugal.

Now imagine spending $9 on a pack of 10 Merkur double-edged blades of superb German quality. That one pack will last you as much as twenty weeks, at one-third the cost of the latest and greatest Gillette or Wilkinson blades. In fact, you could buy a hundred blades for anywhere between $10 and $30, depending on the brand you prefer.

And imagine spending a further $10 on a tub of fine Italian-made shaving soap that will last you for up to three months. Or, if you prefer, buy a tube of traditional shaving cream, again for only $10, that will last about the same length.

The simple fact is that modern cartridge-based shaving is vastly more expensive than traditional wet-shaving. The graph above shows you the total amount spent over one year on blades, soaps/gels, and aftershaves by comparing Gillette’s products against the ones advertised here.

As you can see, shaving with a safety razor is simply far cheaper. That is money that you could spend on anything else you want to improve yourself, not the bottom line of some faceless corporation that hates your masculinity.

2. Your Skin Will Be Stronger and Healthier

Did you ever stop to think about why your cartridge razor needs so many blades? Or why the skin on your face always feels soggy somehow when you are done shaving? Or why, despite the advertising, you always get more ingrown hairs and irritation, not less?

All of this happens to you for a reason.

The shaving foams and gels that you use are designed to make your skin soggy and lumpen. The fact that your cartridge razor cuts deeper into each hair with every stroke ensures that the hairs will become ingrown – which makes it necessary to have more blades on your razor to get rid of the very hairs that those blades caused to become ingrown.

These combine to give you more irritation, not less.

Surely there must be a better way – and there is.

Shaving soap is full of essential oils that nourish your skin and make it stronger and healthier. And the extreme sharpness of double-edged razor blades, combined with proper shaving technique, makes it very easy to get rid of ingrown hairs within weeks.

As a result, your face will feel better after every shave. You will suffer far fewer nicks and cuts from the blades themselves once you master the technique. And your skin will not be irritated or inflamed.

All of which leads to the next big benefit…

3. You Will Look and Feel Better

Your skin will be stronger, smoother, and healthier. As a result, you will look and feel much better when you present your face to the world. Furthermore, because double-edged razor blades are extremely thin and extremely sharp, you will get a far closer shave than you can with standard cartridge razors. Most men who take up traditional wet-shaving report that they feel far less skin irritation and less stubble growth. Some men even report that they only need to shave once every two days, because of the sharpness of the blades.

This will give you greater confidence and presence as a man.

4. You Will Start Your Day Off Right

Traditional wet-shaving forces you to slow down and take a bit of extra time. This is a VERY Good Thing. The modern world is too hectic and busy as it is. The extra time required to use a pre-shave lotion or oil, lather up soap, and shave with a safety razor, is well worth it. You will come to appreciate those precious 10-15 minutes that you can use to make yourself look good. You will value how fresh and alive your skin feels after you shave. And you will realise that when you invest in high-quality, great-value products, you are investing in yourself.

5. Shaving Will Become a Pleasure, Not a Chore

As my friend Adam Piggott likes to say, the modern man takes pride in his appearance and embraces opportunities to appreciate ceremony in his life. Traditional wet-shaving is an art. It is a ceremony. It is a celebration of masculinity, of all the things that make us men. Most of all, it is an expression of tradition, precision, skill, patience, care, and cleanliness. These are all trademarks of a man who is a civilising force upon the world around him. That is the kind of man that other men admire, and other women desire.

Get Started With Traditional Wet-Shaving Today

Tens of thousands of men around the world have rediscovered the value and virtue of traditional shaving. We have never, ever gone back to the vulgar, crass, consumer-driven, low-quality world of cartridge razors unless forced by circumstance. Become one of that group of men. Stand for tradition and good grooming, and stand out among your peers.

Now that you have seen the benefits of wet shaving for yourself, you can start by looking through my catalogue of preferred products and ordering them today. In future posts, I will show you how to do a proper wet-shave, so that you can have a great shave every single time.

Get rid of your cartridge razor, your mass-market gel or foam, and embrace the masculine ritual of traditional wet-shaving today!

<div
